How You Do Anything...
I’ve heard the phrase “The way you do anything is the way you do everything” a goodly number of times lately. It has made me really wonder, as I don’t necessarily agree. I know I don’t do everything to the standards I set for myself all the time. I’m thorough and methodical, usually. I get cranky, tired or just plain stubborn about things; and when I was a single mom, I was way too busy most of the time for my ‘usual.’ Rather, ponder this version: The Way You Do EVERYTHING Is The Way You Do Anything! To me, this is more helpful and I’ll tell you why. I recently went car-hunting for a used car. I saw a variety in our price range. One fella had a little grey Mazda for sale and was willing to show the car late one evening. Now, this little car would not have been in the running anyway – it was too cramped while sitting in it - and driving a car requires a certain level of comfort, IMHO. Even if it had been in the running, I would have passed. Over and over again, this owner explained away weirdness and would add the phrase “But I don’t care about that;” and it was obvious. This was for very basic stuff – like greasing the struts and the battery ‘tie-down’ and the crack in the windshield… I was discussing this with my partner and, all else aside, I could not consider buying this car. Because of the owner’s attitude. I wondered about any regular maintenance and decided that this person probably ‘Didn’t care about that.’ It was how he did everything else on that car. I could only assume it was how he did the maintenance I was wondering about. Oh, sure, nobody’s perfect. We all have bad days. I really can’t assume that how you ‘do anything’ is how you’ll do everything. It may depend upon your particular motivation at the time. In our overwhelmingly busy lives – I may make my decisions based upon how you do everything when deciding how you may do something, however.
